Houston’s Dangerous Roads – Leading the State of Texas in 18-Wheeler Wrecks

If you’ve lived in Houston long enough, you’ve probably noticed the large volume of 18-Wheelers on the roads, and have probably witnessed an 18-Wheeler wreck as well. Houston has a large number of 18-Wheelers for a variety of reasons.

One of them is due to the Port of Houston, one of the busiest ports in the United States, which facilitates extensive maritime trade, resulting in a substantial influx of trucks transporting cargo to and from the port.

The Impact of So Many 18-Wheelers On Houston Roads

There are significant economic costs that come with these types of accidents on businesses and individuals, which include everything from loss of productivity to sudden medical and property damage expenses.
When an 18-wheeler accident occurs, we see severe injuries (and oftentimes fatalities) due to the size, weight, and speed of these commercial vehicles, which have a greater literal impact than a regular passenger motor vehicle. Houston leads the state in trucking and commercial vehicle accidents. However not all roads are created equal, and there are some roads in Harris County, Texas that are worse than others.

I-10
Since 2017, There have been at least 3,537 commercial vehicle accidents on I-10 according to the Houston Chronicle.

Sam Houston Parkway, Beltway 8

Since 2017, there have been 3,186 collisions recorded since 2017. There were 90 accidents alone in 2023 at the intersection of Beltway 8 and Bissonnet street which is a major thoroughfare in Houston.

I-45

The I-45 interchanges along 610 have had over a 100 reported crashes since 2017. In fact overall, I-45 as a whole is the most dangerous road in the entire U.S. according to Popular Mechanics, as it’s the only primary interstate that doesn’t cross state lines (going from Galveston to Dallas), and for every 100 miles of I-45 roadway, there are 56.5 fatal accidents. In fact over a 14-year span, over 320 deaths were recorded by the U.S. Department of Transportation on I-45, with the most treacherous portion being in Houston, Texas.
Overall, two out of every five accidents involving a commercial vehicle in Harris County Texas has reported injuries to drivers, their passengers, or other third-party vehicles impacted by the wreck. There are multiple reasons for this, vehicle congestion, distracted commercial drivers, fatigue, and speeding as the main contributing factors.

Additionally, most of these 18-wheeler or commercial vehicle collisions occur during peak rush hours.
