Fatal Truck Accidents on the Rise in Texas

In the last few years, fatal truck and 18-wheeler accidents have been reported at higher rates across the country for the last few years. Since 2017, the state of Texas has led the nation in fatal trucking-related collisions according to data from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

Additionally, the state of Texas has some of the deadliest roads in America (including U.S. 59), and also four of the most dangerous highways in America. This is confirmed by data from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). According to TxDOT, more than 38,621 collisions along the roads and highways of Texas in 2022 involved 18-wheelers, semi-trucks, and other commercial vehicles. These accidents included 612 fatal accidents that left 716 people dead.

Something to keep in mind, a fully loaded 18-wheeler can weigh anywhere up to 80,000 lbs, and require about 50% more stopping distance than a regular car when traveling a minimum of 55 mph. The Truck Safety Coalition (TSC)have been pushing for the adoption of safety mandates similar to those found in other parts of the world. Unlike other parts of the world, the big rigs you see on U.S. roads are not required to use modern crash avoidance technology that is in existence that could prevent thousands of truck accidents per year and hundreds of deadly accidents.

Some of this technology includes speed-limiters, side underride guards, and automatic emergency brakes.
